The maximum Pell Grant award used to cover over 60% of the average tuition and fees. Today, the average award covers just 33% of those cost. Student loans, both federal and private, represent a much greater percentage of a student’s financial aid package. Really sad that US society devalues education so much. This is why our country’s having problems–too many incompetent (but rich enough to get an education) people in positions of power. We can’t get highly intelligent, capable ppl in powerful positions ’cause we’re preventing the best & the brightest from getting an education. Only the wealthiest can go to coll.&aspire to positions of power. Working while in coll takes away from study time& prevents students from getting most from their educ.

College isn’t a scam especially when you wanna be way more educated, to know the difference between their and there.

  3. inkey2 says:

to 74u73hjd: I agree with you ….to an extent. College can be a scam. You don’t always need advanced degrees make a decent living. My wife graduated “suma” from North Eastern University with a 4 year degree. She could not get a job. Then she went to a “one year secretarial school to become a “legal Secretary”" and now makes quite a decent living….AND….”no debt”

College is a scam when are ignorant people going to open up thier minds?

There is also a petition which you can find there.

i live in Finland and we have free education and u can study as high as you want ;)

in my opinion education is the corner stone for building a great country
    and thus should be free

Perpetual debt in America is what makes our economy function. How insidious it may be. Perpetual debt is like quicksand. The harder you fight it, the more you sink. I read that if everyone in the country, from the government to private corporations to private citizens paid off all their debts. There wouldn’t be $1 left in circulation today. US money isn’t backed up by anything of value. It’s only backed up by debt. Private banks create money out of loans (debt).

  8. eparsels says:

Yeah, Anybody who thinks they will pay off average student loan debt without working 60-70 hours per week for a few years is insane. I’m in public accounting, and my sister is in big law. Both work these hours. Too many people feel entitled. Welcome to the real world, and start working hard. Two, three jobs…and live frugally. Move back in with the parents too. You can’t have everything people. Stop complaining and work.

  9. m1kenas says:

This is insane!!!! it’s not logical that the govt.(taxpayers money) is supposed to pay for anyone. if you become a proffesional, you must pay back whatever you own.

  10. wolgreth says:

can run away like that. the US does have a long arm.

If banks need regulation, and car companies need competition, so do U.S. college. Why there is no overszie on tution? Why college sports get millions of funding and school tuition raise 10-15% increase each year? Where is fairness. Compare with the students in last two decades, the recent governement does not treat this generation fairly. Even more so, governement now borrows more money for future generation to pay for it. We are doom.

my solution to my own college dilemma is: study veterinary medicine in a foreign country (I know one that is a hell lot a cheaper $1000 tuition for a whole year including books and other expenses!) then I will go back here in the US as soon as I graduate and take the Foreign Veterinary Medicine Licensure Exam and other equivalency tests. So yeah I will be Debt-Free and professional ;)

  16. Pvtjamesryan2 says:

Shut up the fuck up dickhead.

  17. chrisr021 says:

You obviously are even more retarded because you didn’t pay attention to any of the true content in this piece.

Before you comment, make sure you have the facts. The fact that more borrowing than before is happening puts a huge damper on whether or not people: choose higher education, buy a house, new car, etc.

    Duh.

  18. Pvtjamesryan2 says:

    The Government’s abandoned you?

Wow these people are fucking retarded. When the hell did it become the Government’s responsibility to pay your debt?!

And these people are in college? This is pathetic.

  19. steadydecline says:

I agree. Once I get my Ph.D., I am leaving the US. Yeah, I will go into default, but maybe once I am rich enough, the federal government will bail me out.

  20. unytcommsys says:

I always advise people to use cash rewards [or whatever reward card will save them money] to pay bills. Why, because a 1% to 5% rebate is always better than none at all. Why spend your life making other people rich. Lets say you save $100 a year with a cash rebate card. Lets also assume that the card will be used through the bulk of your life. $100*30=$3000. That is $3,000 that can be reallocated to other things.

  21. olivia4058 says:

You can’t take bankruptcy on a student loan. You will be permenantly trapped. If you can’t pay it off, the interest will acrue on and on. A $10,000 student loan will eventually be 100,000. That’s the fact. I’ts called governmental financial slavery!

  22. olivia4058 says:

Going to college is not worth creating debt with an unmerciful government. Sometimes, health issues and certain upcoming mental and physical disabilities will prevent a person from making enough money, if any, to barely survive on, but the government will still take their money! You can’t take bankruptcy! You’re trapped permenantly. There’s no mercy! No forgiveness of debt. Financial slavery! Don’t be fooled. A job’s not promised at the end of your education. Education doesn’t equal prosperity.

  23. longtallsallie08 says:

i plan on filing bankruptcy as soon as i graduate. fuck it. i dont plan on staying in this fucked up country anyway

  24. longtallsallie08 says:

those suffering without food and water have the same captors as we do. those who would without resources and keep us in financial slavery are the same corporations that own everything. the two issues are not really seperate

  25. blumac81 says:

Who cares about the rest of the world, this is America, we live in America. We are founded on the freedom to pursue the American dream. The freedom is denied by the costs of education, unless you’re born rich. So it’s right that the rich can contribute their gift to society and not the poor?
